What is Copernicus?

Copernicus is the Earth-observation component of the EU Space Programme — the Sentinel satellite families plus six thematic services (land, marine, atmosphere, climate change, emergency, security). Its defining feature is the free, full and open data policy: anyone, including commercial users, can access the imagery and products at no cost.

Why it is a startup platform, not just a science mission

Free global EO data with guaranteed continuity is an industrial substrate. Crop analytics, methane monitoring, insurance risk, deforestation compliance, maritime tracking — whole categories of European startups are effectively "Copernicus + a model + a market". The main access point is the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem (APIs, on-demand processing); commercial resellers add SLAs and tooling on top.
