What is EIC Pathfinder?

EIC Pathfinder is the European Innovation Council's funding instrument for early-stage, high-risk research on breakthrough technologies — typically Technology Readiness Levels 1–4. It awards grants (commonly up to €3M for Pathfinder Open, up to €4M for thematic Challenges) at 100% funding, aimed at science-heavy teams long before a sellable product exists.

Open vs Challenges

Proposals are evaluated on the science gateway logic: novel technological vision, credible research plan, high-risk/high-gain. This is researcher territory — universities, RTOs and deep-tech spinouts, often pre-incorporation.

The EIC ladder for space tech

Pathfinder is the first rung of the EIC's TRL ladder: Pathfinder (research, TRL 1–4) → EIC Transition (validation, TRL 4–6) → EIC Accelerator (scale-up, TRL 5/6+, grant + equity). A space-tech team can, in principle, ride all three — several propulsion and in-orbit-servicing companies have.

If your TRL is already 5+, skip to the Accelerator; if you hold a Seal of Excellence, national follow-up funding may apply.
